New Years Resolutions That Will Result in a Fresh Look

January 19th, 2016 New Home Decor

With the arrival of a new year many people are inspired to turn over a new leaf, or at least make a significant change to their lives. Some common New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier, read more books, and maybe to reduce that credit card balance.

While all these are well-intentioned, these resolutions often lose steam after a month or so, and have faded into the woodwork by around March. This year, why not resolve to give your household a fresh look this year? Even if your self-help resolution peters out, you’ll still be left with an improvement that brightens up your home for months or even years to come.

Here are some ideas from Piper Classics you might want to adopt as your new year home resolutions this year.

Vintage farmhouse decor

Farmhouse decor offers many ways both big and small to lend a distinctive rustic look and feel to your overall decor. You might want to make a big splash by adding one or two pieces of aged furniture that evoke images of country life. More subtle touches can be appealing as well, with aged decorative pieces reminding observers of a simpler life and simpler times. One small piece placed in each room at a spot where the eye often comes to rest will be enough to transform your household.

Hanging signs

A hanging sign can be a delightful way to spruce up your home. The nice thing about a hanging sign is that you can use it in so many different ways. For instance, you could inscribe the family name on it, or have a depiction of the family profession, favorite hobbies, or admired places. Or you could choose something that’s based on a cheery expression, or a humorous quip.

Throw pillows

Throw pillows are versatile. You can basically place them anywhere – on sofas, rocking chairs, window casements, mantle pieces, or wherever you would like to make a statement about the appeal of rustic life. They can display witty sayings, depict beautiful country settings, or simply add some color to a room.

Framed country artwork

Country décor goes beyond just furniture. Why not choose some framed artwork to add charm and a feeling of comfort to your walls this year? Imagine yourself in your favorite chair. You find your gaze drawn to the opposite wall, where a framed depiction of country life hangs. It serves as a soothing reminder of somewhere you’ve been or someplace where you would like to be.

Heirloom textiles

An heirloom textile can provide a lovely touch when used as a table cloth, a runner, or simply a warming blanket ready for use on its wall rack. Since these are made to be passed on and shared with other family members, you can enjoy their warmth and decorative appeal yourself, knowing that a loved one will enjoy the same coziness in their own home sometime in the future.

If you haven’t heard the term, ‘treenware’ refers to domestic wooden objects, often of an antique flavor, that serve an aesthetic and utilitarian purpose. Treenware like wooden spoons, bowls, scoops, and trenchers – when placed around the household in strategic locations – can be a wonderful way to evoke country life and old-style kitchens of the past.

If you’ve made a resolution at the start of the year, we wish you all the best. And if you’re reading this in late January and February, and haven’t stuck to your resolution, take heart. It happens to the best of us. Enjoy your home and the people closest to you, and plan for next year.
