Tips on Choosing the Right Bedding

Creating a comfortable sleeping situation is essential to getting a good night’s rest. Aside from setting the right environment — cool temperature, blackout curtains — you’ll also want to ensure your bedding is up to par. But how do you choose the right bedding? You need to figure out what color schemes, textures, and accessories work best for you.

Here are some tips on how to select bedding:

Choose a color or pattern that complements your space. Look around your room. Is it full of neutral earth tones? Maybe it’s white or gray. Use your current color scheme as the starting point for your bedding colors. With earth tones, you can select bedding in cream, tan, and even certain grays. With a white or gray palette, you could choose coordinating blues, like navy, give it a pop of color with red, or keep everything fresh and white. If you’re starting with a blank slate, select your favorite color or pattern and work around that.

Layer interesting textures on top of your bedspread. You don’t have to stop once you choose a comforter. Select throw blankets in various textures and patterns, like a quilt and a striped blanket with fringe, to layer on top of it. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and color tones, either. You can always add solid-colored throw blankets or pillows to give your eyes a place to rest.

Add a down comforter or duvet for an extra cozy and luxurious look. A duvet is a must-have when you want to give off a luxe look in your bedroom. Place the duvet under your bedspread or quilt if you want extra loft and fluffiness. However, if you find a coordinating duvet in a fun pattern or bold colors, fold it at the bottom of the bed so it’ll stay on display and give you something to smile about at the end of a long day. Make it even easier by shopping full bedding collections with duvets and the coordination is done for you!

Curate a pile of lush pillows. Pillows allow you to play with pattern and texture layering and create a welcoming space to which you’ll dream of returning. The easiest way to accomplish this look is to start with a couple of large square Euro pillows in the back. Then, you should layer in one (or more) sets of standard pillows. Place a couple of pillows covered in shams that match your bedding in front of the standard pillows. Finish the look with 1-3 smaller throw pillows in the front. If you don’t want to sleep with all these pillows on your bed, place them in a decorative basket or on a storage bench at the bottom of your bed.

Choose pieces that are durable, high-quality, and versatile. Pillows can wear down over time and lose their fluffiness, so you’ll want to update them every few years. However, when you choose high-quality sheets and duvet covers, you’ll be able to enjoy them for years. If you plan on painting your room or changing the decor, make sure you choose bedding that will coordinate with various color schemes and styles.
